This page is a starting point, not legal advice. It reflects this website’s actual current practices — please update it if you add a new service (analytics, advertising, a form plugin, etc.), and consult a legal professional for your specific jurisdiction.
Introduction
This Privacy Policy explains what information Housenivo collects when you use this website, how that information is used, and the choices available to you. We’ve written it in plain English rather than dense legal jargon, because we think a privacy policy should actually be readable.
This page describes this website’s actual, current practices. If new functionality is added later (analytics, advertising, a contact form plugin, etc.), the relevant section below will be updated to match. This page is provided as a starting point and is not legal advice; consult a legal professional for your specific situation and jurisdiction.
Scope of This Policy
This Privacy Policy applies to your use of the Housenivo website, including all articles, checklists, and free tools (the Home Maintenance Planner, Home Problem Finder, Maintenance Checklist, Seasonal Calendar, and Maintenance History). It does not apply to third-party websites that we may link to, which have their own separate privacy practices.
Information We May Collect
Housenivo is built to be usable without creating an account or providing personal information. That said, a few limited categories of information may still be involved, depending on how you interact with the site:
- Information you provide directly — for example, if you email us, we receive whatever information you choose to include (such as your email address and message content). If comments are enabled on articles, submitting a comment provides your name, email address, and comment text.
- Automatically collected technical information — basic, non-identifying technical data (such as browser type and general device information) that our hosting provider may log for standard security and server-operation purposes.
- Locally stored tool data — information generated by our free planning tools, stored only in your own browser (explained in detail below).
How Information Is Used
Any information you send us directly — such as through an email or a comment — is used only to respond to you, address your question, feedback, or correction, or to maintain normal comment moderation if comments are enabled. We do not sell personal information, and we do not use information you send us for unrelated marketing purposes.
Cookies and Similar Technologies
A cookie is a small piece of data that a website asks your browser to store and send back on later visits, typically used to remember settings or recognize a returning visitor. WordPress, the software this site runs on, may set a small number of technical cookies — for example, to remember commenter details between visits if comments are enabled, or session cookies used only when someone is logged into the site’s administrative area. These are standard, functional cookies rather than tracking or advertising cookies.
This site does not currently use dedicated advertising or analytics cookies. If this website begins displaying third-party advertising (such as Google AdSense) in the future, those advertising providers may use cookies and similar technologies to serve ads and measure their performance, and this policy will be updated at that time to disclose the specific providers used, the technologies involved, and any personalized-advertising choices available to you. As of the current version of this policy, no such advertising is implemented on this site.
Local Browser Storage (Not a Cookie)
This is an important distinction worth explaining clearly: local browser storage (often called localStorage) is a different browser technology from a cookie, and it is central to how our free tools work.
When you use the Home Maintenance Planner, Home Problem Finder, Maintenance Checklist, Seasonal Calendar, or Maintenance History tool — generating a plan, checking off a task, or building a history of completed maintenance — that information is saved using your browser’s localStorage, on your own device only.
- It is not automatically transmitted to Housenivo or stored on our servers.
- It is not linked to any account, since none of these tools require a login.
- Clearing your browser’s site data, using a different browser, or switching devices will not carry this information over — it stays local to the specific browser and device where it was created.
- You can clear this data yourself at any time using the Reset/Clear buttons built directly into each tool, or by clearing your browser’s site data through your browser’s own settings.
Third-Party Services
This website runs on WordPress and is hosted by a third-party web hosting provider, which processes standard technical and server-log data as a normal part of delivering the site to your browser. We do not currently integrate additional third-party data processors — such as a CRM, an email marketing platform, or a payment processor — because this site does not sell anything, does not require an account, and does not process payments. If that changes in the future, this section will be updated to name the specific service and describe what it processes.
Advertising and Analytics
This website does not currently run a dedicated analytics platform, and it does not currently display third-party advertising of any kind. If either of those changes in the future — for example, if we add Google Analytics or Google AdSense — this section will be updated with the relevant disclosures, including the specific provider, what data it collects, and what choices (such as opting out of personalized advertising) are available to you at that time. We will not claim that either service is active while it is not.
Do Not Track Signals
Some browsers offer a “Do Not Track” (DNT) signal that a visitor can enable. Because there is no consistent industry standard for how websites should respond to DNT signals, and because this site does not currently use tracking technologies that would be affected by such a signal, we do not currently respond differently to DNT requests. If tracking technologies are added later, this section will be updated accordingly.
Data Sharing and Disclosure
We do not sell, rent, or trade personal information. Information you send us directly may be shared with our web hosting provider only to the extent necessary to operate this website (for example, standard server infrastructure), or disclosed if required to comply with a valid legal obligation.
Data Security
We take reasonable, standard measures to help protect information sent to us — such as relying on reputable WordPress hosting and keeping the site’s software up to date. However, no method of transmission or storage over the internet is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security of any information transmitted to this site.
Data Retention
Emails sent to us are retained only as long as reasonably necessary to address your message. Comment data, if comments are enabled on the site, is retained in line with standard WordPress practice unless you ask us to remove it. Local browser storage used by our free tools stays on your own device indefinitely, until you clear it yourself or clear your browser’s stored site data.
International Users
Housenivo is written primarily for a United States audience, with content also intended to be useful to readers in Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. If you are accessing this site from outside the United States, please be aware that any information you choose to send us directly (such as by email) may be processed in the United States or wherever our hosting infrastructure is located.
Children’s Privacy
This website is intended for a general homeowner audience and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information (for example, through email or a comment), please contact us so we can address it.
Your Privacy Rights and Choices
You can use the vast majority of Housenivo — including every free maintenance tool — without providing any personal information at all, since none of these tools require an account or login.
- You can clear any locally stored tool data at any time (see “Local Browser Storage” above).
- If you have contacted us and would like your email correspondence, or any comment you submitted, reviewed or removed, you can contact us using the details on our Contact page and we will address your request.
- If you are located in a jurisdiction that grants you specific statutory privacy rights (such as the right to access, correct, or delete personal information we hold about you), you may exercise those rights by contacting us; we will respond in accordance with applicable law to the extent it applies to our processing.
External Links
Some pages may link to external websites — for example, a manufacturer’s website or a government safety resource — for reference. We are not responsible for the privacy practices, content, or security of external websites, and we encourage you to review the privacy policy of any third-party site you visit.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time as the website changes — for example, if we add analytics, advertising, or a new third-party service. We encourage you to review this page periodically. Continued use of the site after an updated policy is posted means you accept the changes.
